Forced Vasectomies in Virginia?

Men in Alabama would be required to get a vasectomy within a month of turning 50 or after having a third child under a bill introduced by a Democrat in the state House of Representatives on Thursday.

Rolanda Hollis, who represents Birmingham, said the proposed legislation, which she calls a “vasectomy bill,” came in response to the state legislature’s Human Life Protection Act, which was signed into law last year and banned almost all abortions in the state.

The Human Life Protection Act would make abortion legal only in cases where the life of the mother is in danger.  Its implementation has been delayed by a federal court.

“The vasectomy bill is to help with the reproductive system,” Hollis wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “This is to neutralize the abortion ban bill. The responsibility is not always on the women. It takes 2 to tangle (sic). This will help prevent pregnancy as well as abortion of unwanted children.”

In another tweet, she said the purpose of the legislation was to “help men become more accountable.”  Hollis’ proposal would require men to pay for their own procedures.

Under existing law, “there are no restrictions on the reproductive rights of men,” according to the proposal.

The bill was referred to the House judiciary committee on the same day proposed legislation known as the “Born Alive” bill was reintroduced in the Alabama House.

It would require a physician to “exercise reasonable care” to save a child born alive after an abortion or attempted abortion.
