Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised President Donald Trump on Thursday, telling an audience Trump listens to opposing views and carefully examines “the ensemble of facts” before making decisions.
At an event in Toronto organized by the New York Times and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, Trudeau suggested Trump listens to opposing views, a claim that caused many in the left-wing crowd to start laughing.
“No, I can understand the laughter but there’s a lot of politicians who have a deep, vested interest in being right all the time and therefore close themselves off sometimes to facts or evidence or differing opinions,” Trudeau said, according to Fox News.
“What I’ve found from this president is he will listen to arguments made,” Trudeau continued. “He will look at the ensemble of facts and proposals of impacts you put together, and he will be open to shifting his position.”
Trudeau also said Trump has kept the promises he’s made.
“I have always found that whenever he has made an engagement to me or a commitment to me on the phone or in person, he followed through on that, and that is someone you can work with,” Trudeau said, according to the New York Times.
Trudeau’s praise of Trump has surprised many. Unlike Trump, Trudeau is a noted leftist who supports the North American Free Trade Agreement and bringing massive amounts of refugees from the Middle East to Canada. Trudeau is also generally a supporter of high taxes and the theory humans are primarily responsible for causing climate change, policies the Trump administration has opposed and been criticized for by many left-leaning media outlets, including the New York Times.
In addition to praising Trump, Trudeau also said he believes NAFTA, despite Trump’s rhetoric, will remain in place in the years to come.
“NAFTA will remain a hugely important and successful trade deal for both our countries,” Trudeau said.
