One of the greatest benefits of living in this country is that citizens can choose their representative without expecting retaliation from those who do not agree. However, in this election, people have reacted negatively to those with a different opinion.

Last month, for example, a bakery staff refused to sell a cake because a customer wanted “Trump 2016” on it. Unfortunately, the rivalry between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump supporters has escalated. Just a few days ago, a female Trump supporter was assaulted at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.

The Minnesota College Republicans released a statement the day after the attack stressing the importance of a strong response from the college.

We expect that Gustavus Adolphus College will come to a resolution on this issue to combat violence on campus towards students with differing opinions.

It is a shame that the mainstream media has not reported the assault. College students are no longer able to freely express their opinions about the coming election, and it is important that people understand their basic rights may have been compromised.

As the Minnesota College Republicans mention at the end of its statement:

Nobody, regardless of race, gender or political party, should feel unsafe because of the way they look or what they wear when they walk on campus.
