While customer protests have quieted down over Target’s policy of allowing transgenders to use whichever restroom they are most comfortable with, the company is spending over $20 million as they work to add private restrooms for those not happy with the open stall policy. In the April 19th press release Target stated:
“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”
During this remodel many stores are also getting a face-lift to their regular restrooms, meaning Target “guests”, as they are called, are directed to portable restrooms placed outdoors in the parking lot. Not your average ballpark port-a-pot, these units offer running water, flush toilets, mirrors and more. Walk inside and one feels like they’ve walked into a restroom found in a fine restaurant or lounge. Paneled walls, tiled floors, even solid wood doors on the toilet stall. There is just one problem. As Target works to accommodate the LBGT community with gender neutral commodes they’ve brought in very gender specific temporaries with little or no security to be seen.
With concerns of men dressed as women for nefarious purposes and stalking young girls, it seems Target would make known these temporary facilities had some sort of security. The only thing you’ll find is a camera on the building’s roof or a cart attendant rounding up his next train of empty carts. No one is saying how many unreported incidents have occurred beyond these 10 published reports but we know men are abusing Target’s dangerous policy. From peeping toms in the dressing rooms to filming in the ladies room one has to wonder, is it even worth going?
