While a service dog develops a special bond with their human, they are not a pet, per se. They are a working animal charged with doing work or performing tasks for their person in need. Regardless whether a dog is a service dog or a pet, common courtesy would tell someone to ask before either they or their children attempt to pet the dog.

For one man and his daughter, that common courtesy was not practiced. When the disabled veteran made a simple request for father to tell the girl to stop petting his dog, what the dad did in response is absolutely deplorable.

As a disabled Army veteran sat at a Fayetteville, NY Dunkin Donuts with his service dog, 21-year old Dominic Vidal’s daughter began to pet the dog. Vidal and his daughter were told that the little girl could not pet the dog because he was a service dog. This news enraged Vidal so much that he punched the disabled veteran in the face twice before fleeing the scene.

The veteran was treated at the scene with minor injuries and Vidal later turned himself in to police.

When he surrendered, Vidal apologized and said he should not have done what he did. His court appearance is scheduled for January 12.

Vida has been charged with two misdemeanors, third degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
