Liberal Logic: LGBT Club At High School Okay, But THIS Group Gets Banned

Guest post by Jennifer Burke via Politistick

In yet another case of the world being upside down and the morality of our country being completely eroded, a Las Vegas high school has banned a pro-life group because it was deemed too controversial. This same school, however, does have an LGBT club that exists with the school’s blessing.

Angelique Clark is a junior at the West Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas. The academy is in the Clark County School district. She is also a pro-life supporter and wanted to start a pro-life club. Since the school has an gay-straight alliance club, a chess club, and even a Bible club, she didn’t think it would be a problem.

She was wrong.

In an interview with the Daily Caller, Clarke called out her school for its unfair, double standard.

“I think it’s unfair mostly because the administration thinks it’s up to their opinion,” she told TheDCNF. “Because they don’t like the idea of a pro-life club, you can’t have it. It’s not up to the principal or the vice principal to say ‘I personally agree with you or don’t agree with you so you can’t have this club.’ I think it’s unfair because they obviously didn’t have that bias against the other clubs.”

Clark said that she initially approached the academy about beginning a pro-life group in December 2014. Though the administrators dragged their feet, she still had 25 people who indicated that they wanted to join. When she was finally able to speak with the assistant principal she was told that her club was denied because it was “too controversial.” The existence of the club could be seen as offensive to some. They also told her that others were more qualified to speak on the issue than she was.

She is not giving up. Clark is filing a lawsuit against her school for violation of her free speech rights. She is being represented by the Thomas More Society which is a ‘not-for-profit, national public interest law firm dedicated to restoring respect in law for life, family, and religious liberty.’

In a statement, Clark explained why she is suing the academy.

“When I first applied to form a pro-life club, I never imagined I would have to sue my school to be able to exercise my free speech rights,” Clark said. My fellow pro-life students and I simply want to make our voices heard and to educate other students on a topic that’s important to us – choosing life. We hope for a quick resolution that allows us to get the West Career and Technical Academy Pro-Life Club up and running as soon as possible.”

According to the Daily Caller, the Clark County School District would not comment, claiming they do not offer comments on pending litigation.
