No Conservative should fast-track Obamatrade TPP

Curtis Ellis highlights similarities between TPP, genesis of EU:

As this column goes to press, the U.S. Senate is set to put President Obama’s Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on a fast track for approval. The House of Representatives will take it up in June.

Supporters say it’s an “urban legend” that the TPP, or Obamatrade since Congress will have to pass it to find out what’s in it, will allow Obama and any future president to rewrite our immigration laws without Congress.

These shills would have us ignore the U.S. trade representative’s own website, which acknowledges there is an entire chapter of the agreement on temporary entry workers, what we used to call migrant workers. Ignore, too, the historical record: Previous trade agreements with Chile, Singapore and South Korea all expanded the number of foreign workers allowed into the U.S.

Obama’s supporters tell us to ignore Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. After reading the TPP agreement, he described exactly how the president could use the TPP to advance his immigration agenda.

They would even have us ignore the White House itself.

For it is the White House that provides definitive evidence the Trans-Pacific Partnership is all about opening our borders to the free movement of people as well as goods.

Standing next to President Obama at a White House news conference on April 28, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan explicitly states the Trans-Pacific Partnership will create “a new economic sphere in which people goods and money will flow freely in the Asia-Pacific region.” (emphasis added)

The White House has not said Mr. Abe is wrong.

The prime minister’s choice of words is telling. They come right out of the Treaty of Rome – the document that established the European Economic Community, today’s European Union, a compact based on the free flow of people, goods and money.

The similarities between the EU and the TPP don’t end there…
