California Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) presented a legislative package of 10 bills supposedly designed to “extend health care, legal rights, and business protection to immigrants who are illegally living in the state.”
Democrats tout the innocuously named package “Immigrants Shape California,” as their response to federal inaction and paralysis on immigration along with the injustices of the broken national immigration system. “With these bills California will again show the kind of practical, humane, and forward-thinking leadership that we hope can move the needle on the national discussion,” said Speaker Toni G. Atkins.
So what “protections” are included in the package?
One bill provides assistance for the recent surge of immigrant children crossing the border to stay in the country indefinitely. Who will pay for that? Why the taxpayers, of course! With estimates of over 2,000 illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. border each month, this so-called “assistance” will become nothing but a giant magnet pulling even more illegal immigrants into California. Apparently, the Democrats see no problem with taxpayers paying for non-taxpayers and non-citizens because they are just poor children like Baby Jesus. Interestingly, according to the well-respected Pew Hispanic Center, the average age of an illegal immigrant in the U.S. today is 36.2 years; just children, right?
Another bill in the package bans businesses from discriminating based on immigration status, citizenship, or language. So let’s get this straight, even if a person is in the U.S. illegally (a crime!), applies for a job by lying about citizenship (a crime!), and cannot speak a word of English (a crying shame), he cannot be “discriminated against?” What does that even mean? That means a business has to hire an illegal immigrant even when he obviously could not perform the duties of the job. And what happens if the illegal immigrant feels he was a victim of discrimination? Why, he now has legal standing to sue the business for damages!
Other bills seek to establish state agencies to help newly arrived illegal immigrants and provide legal protection from unscrupulous employers (you know, the horrible-awful-no-good ones who want to hire legal citizens), and extend legal protections to help illegal immigrants avoid detention and deportation! Seriously, read that again…to avoid detention and deportation! California will be helping illegal immigrants not get caught funded with taxpayer money!
As if all those “protections” weren’t enough, another bill makes California the first state in the union to allow illegal immigrants to receive Medicaid and enroll in its state-funded health care exchange, otherwise known as Medi-Cal. This bill extends coverage to more than 1 million people living in California illegally. So who pays for that? The state? The federal government? Not so fast. It seems the oh-so-practical Democrats failed to include any funding to cover the additional costs. “We understand the burdens facing immigrants who want to go to work and raise their families in safe neighborhoods, and the rationale behind these bills is admirable,” said Senate Minority Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar). “But without money from Congress and President Obama, it will be very difficult and costly for California taxpayers to fund all of these bill proposals.” Surely that will be the end of it, right? Wrong. The Left never lets a little thing like funding stop them; one need only look at how Obamacare itself was passed to see that fact.
Just how much will all this “protection” cost? Even those on the Left admit cautious estimates of the “Immigrants Shape California” package run beyond $1.3 billion per year! $1.3 billion in a state already drowning in a sea of debt.
And that’s just the monetary cost. What about the cost to the legal citizens of California–specifically, the children?
What about the injustices being done to California’s legal citizen children when resources are drained from schools, welfare, hospitals, and the healthcare system in order to provide services for children who do not even legally belong in the state? “But they were born here,” cry the immigration activists. Although some of the children of illegal immigrants may have been born in the U.S. and are therefore citizens, had their parents not entered California illegally, these children probably wouldn’t be in California schools and wouldn’t require a taxpayer funded-education. Therefore, it’s more than fair to say their education costs also originate from their parents’ illegal entry into California.
When resources are shifted to illegal immigrant students, all students receive a diminished educational experience. While the shift provides the illegal immigrant student with an enhanced education as compared with their country of origin, the legal citizen student is shortchanged (just to name a few) with an education with less funding, higher construction costs, overcrowded classrooms, higher student-to-teacher ratios, lowered standards, multi-lingual environments, and cultural disruptions such as gang activity. How is it that the Left is perfectly fine with the injustice done to the education of the legal citizen student?
And what about the adult legal citizen taxpayer? How is it not an injustice for him to have his hard-earned taxes diverted to illegal immigrants and their children who have not paid one single penny into the system? On what planet is that fair or for that matter, practical? As California Democrats continue to raise taxes and impose burdensome regulations on businesses, more and more of its tax base is fleeing the state. The Left seems oblivious to that fact, dolling out more and more taxpayer money to illegal immigrants; however even the government money will run out at some point, but that’s the “practical, humane, and forward-thinking leadership” of the Democrats for you.
Is it really “practical” then, for illegal immigrants to be deserving of “protections” at the expense of legal citizens? Not at all. What then is driving the Democrats to implement this impracticable “Immigrants Shape California” package? The better question is who is driving them and the answer is a multifarious conglomeration of amnesty activist and lobbyists.
“NCLR California is excited to support the “Immigrants Shape California” Legislative Package…This package illustrates an unassailable truth: that immigrants are part of our economic and social engine, and that their fair treatment will only strengthen their contributions to California’s progress. Congress should take note; this is yet one more example of how California is leading the way,” preened Delia de la Vara, National Council of La Raza Vice President, California.
That’s right, the pro-amnesty and open borders advocates of La Raza (meaning “The Race” in Spanish) are leading the way for illegal immigrants in California and for Congress proving this push by Democrats for “protections” is nothing more than a blatant end run around the U.S. Constitution and Congress. Having his unconstitutional Executive Actions on amnesty thwarted in Texas by an upstanding U.S. District Court Judge, President Obama, the Department of Justice, and their minions have moved on to California. Cloaking their efforts in the mantle of “protection” and “practicality,” the Left is entrenching illegal immigrants in California. And as California goes, so goes the nation…or so they hope.
In truth, the Left wants neither protection nor practicality; instead, they seek to further grow their own power by growing Democratic voter bloc with an influx of illegal immigrants while simultaneously destroying traditional American culture. Their effort is clearly evident in the fact that Democrats view federal “inaction” and “paralysis” with immigration reform as a negative, when it is in all actuality a positive providing resistance and opposition to their unconstitutional actions and ideology.
A reaction to inaction, paralysis, and injustice? In reality, this immigration package is neither and so much more.
