The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church has announced plans to protest at the Oscars this Sunday. Before hitting the red carpet to protest the “liberal media” at the Oscars, the militantly anti-homosexual group will protest at five Santa Clarita Valley churches in northern Los Angeles County.
“We’re going to expose those false preachers for lying to their congregations,” Westboro Baptist Church spokesman Steve Drain said from Kansas this week.
The group, which is not affiliated with any Baptist organization, believes churches like those to be targeted on Sunday are guilty of violating Old Testament tenements. According to their verbosely grandiose website, Westboro is “an Old School (or, Primitive) Baptist Church. We adhere to the teachings of the Bible, preach against all form of sin (e.g., fornication, adultery [including divorce and remarriage], sodomy).”
Local church leaders and law enforcement have been notified of the group’s intentions. Certainly the Oscars will be prepared for them as well. In the past, Westboro has been known to be no-shows at their own protests, so stayed tuned.
