In the wake of Colorado and San Bernardino shootings, we’re hearing plenty about mass shootings, mass murder, gun control, and the fact that there have been 355 mass shootings already this year. People and media are throwing figures around to sway people’s opinion toward their viewpoint.
TheDailyCaller has put together an important article breaking down the facts on these issues.
The Washington Post and several other media outlets made hay after Wednesday’s shooting in San Bernardino by claiming the attack was the 355th mass shooting in the U.S. since the beginning of 2015. The reality is a lot more nuanced.
After reading their article, it’s easy to see how facts get skewed in headlines and 140 character tweets. Too often people ONLY read the headlines. How do I know this? Put out a story or tweet that only tells part of the story and is intended to be a lead into a more in-depth article. Then watch how many people respond as if the headline IS the whole story. And then watch them spread their misconception of the “fact” as if it were the whole truth. Frightening.
